Instruct-ERIC NMR Researchers Elected as ISMAR Fellows

Professor Harald Schwalbe of Goethe Universität Frankfurt (GUF) and Director of Instruct-ERIC, and Professor Martin Blackledge of IBS Grenoble have been elected as fellows of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance (ISMAR).

Election as an ISMAR Fellow recognises significant scientific contributions and service to the international magnetic resonance community.

Prof. Schwalbe was elected based on their pioneering research in biomolecular NMR, including development of dynamic ensemble and time-resolved approaches for RNA, DNA, and proteins at GUF.

As Director of Instruct, Prof. Schwalbe was also recognised for their leadership in advancing international collaboration and strengthening NMR research networks across Europe and beyond.

 

Prof. Schwalbe was elected as an ISMAR Fellow for their work using NMR for time-resolved studies of RNA, DNA, and proteins.

 

Prof. Schwalbe commented: “I am very honoured by this election, especially, because it fits to Instruct that democratises access to structural biology techniques. Overcoming geographical and technological borders is the key mission of Instruct, as it enables exciting fundamental research.”

Prof. Blackledge was recognised for their application of NMR to study intrinsically disordered proteins, including the development of integrated ensemble methodologies and computational frameworks that have helped define the field.

This, as well as elucidating the roles of protein disorder in viral replication, cellular signalling, and biological function, led to Prof. Blackledge being elected as a fellow, and was also instrumental in receiving the Instruct Bertini Award, presented at the Instruct Biennial Structural Biology Conference.

Prof. Blackledge commented: “It is a tremendous honour to be elected to this prestigious fellowship that once again recognises the importance of intrinsic protein disorder and dynamics in molecular biology, and in particular the role that high field NMR spectroscopy has to play in describing and understanding the function of this fascinating class of proteins."
